“The music of Dorival Caymmi is the sound of my early childhood.
It's the sea, and those who make a living from it; it's the bohemian Rio nights of the 1950's; it's the invention of a myth, the mythical Bahia.
Recording his songs was to revisit my first neighborhood, where he also used to live. It was like seeing myself as a little girl, learning to sing and play my guitar through his songs. It was a plunge deep within my inner child.
I took a trip.”
The text above written by Joyce Moreno accurately translates the realization of the album 'Fiz uma Viagem – Canções de Dorival Caymmi' (I took a trip – Songs by Dorival Caymmi).
A Brazilian composer, guitar player, and gifted singer, Joyce Moreno is nationally and internationally recognized as one of the most distinguished talents of her generation. In this CD she gives us her unique and very personal view of the Bahian genius’ musical work. Through hers previously unreleased arrangements, great moments of Caymmi’s music are recreated with originality and elegance, the high marks of Joyce’s career.
Accompanied by Helio Alves on the piano, Rodolfo Stroeter on the bass, and Tutty Moreno on the drums, Joyce Moreno’s musical trip through Caymmi’s work flies over traditional musical boundaries and expands into rhythmically sometimes delicate sometimes intense arrangements, so exploring the different colors of her repertoire.
