So prodigal in its variety of forms, rhythms, melodies, and harmonies, being so widespread throughout the world, Brazilian music has in Dorival Caymmi’s work one of its greatest pillars.
Recorded in December, 2016 in the spectacular Rainbow Studio in Oslo, Norway, “Dorival” is an album collectively created by the four musicians that exclusively brings together compositions by Dorival Caymmi. Each of the musicians brings to “Dorival” something from their own backgrounds so they can, together, improvise, structure, deconstruct, and recreate Caymmi’s music, taking it across seas no man had ever sailed before (allusion to the famous verse by Portuguese poet Camões, “Por mares nunca dantes navegados”).
The quartet offers an absolutely unique and spontaneous reading of Caymmi’s songs, renewing the language of Brazilian instrumental music, and at the same time making these unreleased re-readings a rich panel of the comprehensive Brazilian creative music.
